Case Sealing in Cold Storage: Why Tape Fails and Hot-Melt Wins

Below 5 °C, pressure-sensitive tape loses adhesion and returns fail in the cold chain. This guide covers sealing strategies for freezer lines.

The cold-chain sealing problem

Pressure-sensitive tape relies on adhesive flow to bond. Below about 5 °C, that flow slows dramatically; returns and split seams spike in freezers. For frozen food, the seal must survive -25 °C warehouse and transit conditions.

Hot-melt: formulated for cold

Hot-melt adhesives are formulated with the temperature range in mind. Applied at high temperature, they wet out the board surface and re-solidify into a strong bond that remains secure at freezer temperatures.

Condensation management

Cold corrugate condenses moisture, which weakens any adhesive bond. YanMao's hot-melt stations use moisture-tolerant adhesive formulations and pre-heat zones that dry the flap surface before application.

When tape is still right
